Biofeedback: a Noninvasive Treatment for Many Conditions

Dr. Skye recently completed the certification requirements for Board Certification in Biofeedback (BCB).

Biofeedback uses computers and other tools, including one's hands, to provide physiological information or "feedback" to help increase awareness. The feedback is then used to determine and monitor treatment methods, such as breathing techniques, which are practiced to make physiological changes and in turn improve a condition.

The benefits of biofeedback are many. It is noninvasive. It can be an alternative when medications aren't working well or not tolerated or too dangerous, such as in pregnancy. It can help reduce or eliminate the need for some medications. And primarily, it helps people take charge of their health.

Biofeedback is especially powerful when integrated with lifestyle changes, nutrition, natural substances, and botanical remedies.

Some of the disorders Dr. Skye treats include:
Anxiety Disorders
Attention Deficit (ADD) and Hyperactivity (ADHD) Disorder
Autoimmune conditions
Behavioral work (drug/alcohol/smoking/weight)
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Depressive Disorders
Headache
Hypertension
Insomnia
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Raynaud's Disease
Sleep Disorders
Stress Management
Stress-Related Disorders
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)

While many insurance companies won't yet reimburse for biofeedback training, some conditions, such as generalized anxiety disorder, are beginning to receive coverage.

Biofeedback alone has been found to be effective in research settings compared to alternative treatments for many of the above conditions. And most of these conditions' efficacy exceeds the FDA's requirements for drug efficacy for those same conditions.

BCIA* board certification recognizes competence using biofeedback instruments for monitoring and assisting with physiological self-regulation. Certification is achieved through a multi-year journey of practical training, professional mentoring, a thorough study of human anatomy and physiology, and objective examination.
