Insomnia Q & A

Do I have insomnia?

A chronic inability to sleep, or poor sleep patterns, may indicate insomnia. With insomnia, you’re unable to sleep at times when you should be able to. You may have trouble falling asleep when you go to bed, or you may wake up too early or wake up frequently throughout the night.

When you feel tired, but aren’t able to sleep, bedtime might bring anxious feelings. During the day, your work and life tasks may suffer because you’re just too tired to concentrate. Irritability and sluggishness are other common effects of insomnia.

Why do I have insomnia?

Insomnia may be caused by out-of-control anxiety or ongoing depression. But certain physical ailments also contribute to sleep disturbances. These include:

  • Sinus problems and allergies
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Hormone imbalances, include thyroid issues
  • Asthma
  • Chronic pain

Dr. Skye can help you figure out why you’re having trouble sleeping, and work with you to find a solution.

How is insomnia treated at Integral Natural Medicine?

Dr. Skye will start with an analysis of your stress levels and how you're currently managing the stress of everyday life. She may also have you undergo biofeedback testing, which involves determining how your body responds to mental and physical stressors. Instruments measure your heart rate, skin temperature, blood pressure, and breathing rate, and then the doctor helps you learn to regulate these involuntary responses so you can calm yourself in stressful situations.

She may also do neurotransmitter testing, which looks at levels of chemicals in your brain to determine their effect on your sleep cycle. If your lifestyle has brought you to a point that you’re in adrenal overdrive, she’ll offer solutions that may include breathing techniques, guided visualization, and meditation. Natural supplements and herbal medicine may be prescribed to help regulate these chemicals and hormones.

What will I notice when insomnia improves?

When you get more adequate sleep, you’ll feel more rested and likely less anxious about nighttime. A veil of subtle depression may also lift, and you might feel your mood and outlook on life brighten. With Dr. Skye’s help in treating the underlying causes of your insomnia, your feeling of wellbeing should improve.

Lack of sleep can interfere with your cognitive abilities, too, so a well-rested you will be able to think more clearly. Proper sleep also helps reduce overall inflammation, which improves your energy levels and overall health. By improving your sleep, you can reduce your risk of chronic illness, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
